The Orion Region![]() The constellation Orion is a stellar museum. The bright overexposed area is the Great Nebula in Orion. Also called M42. Located 1600 light years from earth, this stellar birth place is the nearest nebula of this type. M42 is visible to the naked eye as a faint smudge of light below Orion's 3 belt stars. The large red half circle, called Barnard's Loop, is possibly a supernova remnant. This is a 25 minute exposure on 200 ASA slide film with a 50 mm lens from 7200' at Star Hill, New Mexico. |
